STEM Professionals

How much time will it take?

Most consults are just a couple of phone calls or emails.

Will I get compensated?

It depends. Most of the time, our STEM professionals volunteer their time, however if you have an involved question that requires research or need to take time off of work to meet or come to your set, then yes, you should be compensated. In those cases, the Exchange does not take a commission or negotiate fees.

Will I meet celebrities?

Rarely. It’s not impossible. It’s also not impossible that you’ll run into a celebrity at your local deli. These consults are about inspiring the public with more and better science, not hobnobing.

Will I have the final word on all science in a film or TV production?

Probably not. Unfortunately, event if the person with whom you interact on a film or show (often the writer) would like the science to be 100% in line with your input – they may not be the final word on what appears on screen within the very collaborative world of on screen storytelling.

Will my name appear in the credits?

Possibly. Probably the person with whom you work will not be the final word on who gets into the credits, but sometimes our scientists appear in the “Special Thanks” section of a film.

Will I need to sign an NDA (Nondisclosure Agreement)?

Sometimes. This is up to you as to whether and how you would like to move forward as it pertains to NDAs.
